DOGS DO NOT SWEATWhen you see a dog panting, that’s him/her trying to cool off. This works fine in normal temperatures but when the temperatures rise, panting may not be enough. Indoors a dog will often find the coolest place to lie but outside shade and a plentiful supply of water are essential. Dogs will often tip their water bowls over which should be remembered if they are to be left for any length of time. Dogs love crushed ice especially if meaty flavoured. Not all dogs like being immersed in water or sprayed with a hose. To cool a dog down try splashing water on his/her chest or cover with a cold wet towel Water bottles with attached drinking bowl can be purchased and are very useful for taking in the car or when out walking. On an hour long walk in hot weather a large dog can consume 1 to 1½ litres of water. Dogs left in cars are a definite No-No. Even with all the windows open the temperature in a car can quickly soar even on a cloudy day and a dog can easily become severely distressed. If you come across a dog left in a car and the owner has not returned within in 15 to 20 minutes, call the police. |
